Plays Monk - Don Pullen - LP - Pre Owned Vinyl (Arrives in 14days)

Don Pullen’s 'Plays Monk' is far more than a tribute—it’s a daring conversation across time. Pullen, known for his volcanic technique and boundary-pushing creativity, approaches Thelonious Monk’s repertoire not as holy relics, but as living, breathing works of art. Each track pulses with Pullen’s signature energy, transforming Monk’s angular melodies and enigmatic harmonies into something uniquely his own, while still preserving their idiosyncratic charm.

What sets this album apart is Pullen’s rare ability to balance deep respect with restless innovation. Rather than simply recreating Monk’s iconic compositions, he interrogates them—stretching, twisting, and reshaping the familiar contours of pieces like “’Round Midnight” and “Well, You Needn’t.” The result is a set of performances that feel both familiar and startlingly new, inviting listeners to rediscover Monk through a fresh lens.

For collectors and jazz devotees, 'Plays Monk' is a testament to the enduring power of jazz as a living tradition. It’s an essential record for anyone fascinated by the ongoing dialogue between past and present, and a showcase of Pullen’s fearless artistry. This album rewards deep listening and stands as a vital document in the lineage of jazz piano.
