After spending extended periods with the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the 1940s and early 1950s, Art Pepper (1925-1982) began recording small-group albums in the mid-1950s. The Return of Art Pepper presents the saxophonist in a quintet setting (with Jack Sheldon, Russ Freeman, Leroy Vinnegar & Shelly Manne) recorded shortly after he completed his first drug-related prison sentence of nearly two years (1953–1954).
