Round Midnight - Quatuor Ebene - Audio CD (Arrives in 50 days)

Following a nocturnal theme, Quatuor Ebène performs ‘Round Midnight. This creatively conceived album brings together major figures from different streams of 20th century music: Arnold Schoenberg, Henri Dutilleux and four masters of jazz and popular idioms – Thelonius Monk (who wrote the jazz standard ‘Round Midnight), Cole Porter, Henry Mancini and Victor Young.

Dutilleux’s glistening quartet Ainsi la nuit is complemented by two works for string sextet: Schoenberg’s passionate Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), and Night bridge, musings on Monk, Porter, Mancini and Young by the Ebène’s cellist Raphaël Merlin. Viola player Antoine Tamestit and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt complete the line-up.

Raphaël Merlin points out the night’s special power to heighten our sensitivity to music. “Our hearing becomes exceptionally acute, we find ourselves as alert as an animal … especially receptive to new impressions ... It offers all kinds of possibilities to a composer.”
