Admired as a standard-bearer for great musical traditions (those of both Russia and Vienna), Elisabeth Leonskaja renews them with her questing spirit: “She constantly asks questions of the music, looks for different ways into it,” wrote the Guardian. “Her answers are always convincing, even in a piece she has played many times before.”

With the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Michael Sanderling, Leonskaja has now recorded the piano concertos of Robert Schumann and Edvard Grieg. These much-loved Romantic works, both in the key of A minor, have often been paired since the LP era. Earlier this month, BBC Radio 3’s Record Review honoured the release as its Record of the Week, praising Leonskaja’s “warm and rounded” playing in an interpretation of “beauty prioritised over athleticism”, with pianist and orchestra suggesting that “they have all the time in the world”.
