Celebrating the natural wonders of Mother Earth – Terra Mater – Christina Pluhar and the instrumentalists of L’Arpeggiata are joined by the charismatic Swedish mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman, who happens to be the mother of climate activist Greta Thunberg.

“You will hear the chirping of the nightingales, sweet birds, cuckoos, frogs and chicken, the whispers of the winds, heavy storms and the rumbling of the seas …, “writes Christina Pluhar. She adds that Malena Ernman “has a vast repertoire and range of vocal possibilities: she really can do anything with her voice.”

2025 marks L’Arpeggiata’s 25th anniversary and Terra Mater, embracing and melding a diversity of eras and genres, typifies the ensemble’s approach. The emphasis is on Italian, German and English music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, with numbers by composers such as Monteverdi, Bononcini, Biber and Handel beside traditional songs and ballads.

The track that closes the album might be a surprise – ‘Nature Boy’, a hit for Nat King Cole in the early 1960s. It was written by eden ahbez (born George Alexander Aberle), a precursor of the hippie movement. “That song is an old favourite of mine, and it has such a wonderful text,” says Christina Pluhar. “It’s about how life doesn’t have much meaning if you aren’t able to give or receive love, so I thought it was a perfect ending to our programme.”
