This new recording presents the rarely played Sonatas for 2 Violins by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), catalogued as RV 70, 71, 68 and 77, under the title Sonatas with or without bass. The palette of colours and expressive modalities used by Vivaldi in these sonatas is truly impressive: arpeggios, double strings, passages in the high register, extremely complex articulations that require a superfine bow technique and a flourishing cantabile of genius simplicity and expression. Also included is a Sonata or Duet (Duet) for two violins by Andrea Zani (1696-1759), divided into four movements, and a canon (Canone). Zani was a well known composer who loved Vivaldi's writing and style, so much so that it has come to be assumed that Zani spent a period of study under the guidance of the Venetian master. Played by two passionate Italian violinists: Alessandro Ciccolini and Domenico Scicchitano, both specialized in Baroque repertoire and active in such prestigious groups as Il Giardino Armonico, Il Complesso Barocco (Alan Curtis) and others.
