Founder's Note

Hi, I’m Avijit — founder of Calcutta Records.

About three years ago, my dad took me to Freeschool Street. We stumbled into a shop selling records. I wondered what these big albums with beautiful artwork were all about. Then it hit me — as a kid, I used to play with records like frisbees and sometimes spun one on a little green Philips player at home.
Back then, I had no idea about their audiophile quality.
I bought a few records that day, and with my dad’s help, we got a turntable and hooked it up. The warmth and clarity of the sound astounded me. I was instantly hooked.
That’s when the journey really began — collecting records, upgrading equipment, experimenting with cartridges, amps, speakers — you name it.
Of course, as the collection grew, so did the clutter. My wife kept hounding me about turning the house into a stockpile of records. She finally said, “If you’re going to keep doing this, you better make it legit.”
That’s how CalcuttaRecords.com was born — a way to share our passion and the magic of physical music with the rest of the world.

If you love the experience of vinyl and great sound, welcome to the CRC family.

FAQ

You can buy vinyl records online through specialized stores like Calcutta Records, which offers a curated selection of vintage and rare LPs, especially Japanese pressings. Look for platforms that grade records clearly and offer safe shipping.

Absolutely. Vintage vinyl offers warm, analog sound and collectible value. Many older pressings — especially Japanese, UK, or US — have superior mastering and build quality. Stores like Calcutta Records verify condition and authenticity for collectors and casual listeners alike.

Reputable sellers grade vinyl records using standards like NM (Near Mint), VG+ (Very Good Plus), etc. At Calcutta Records, every record is inspected and described with visible wear, audio playability, and sleeve condition noted in detail.

Japanese pressings are known for their audiophile-grade sound, heavier vinyl, and attention to detail. These editions often include bonus inserts and are quieter in playback. Collectors often seek them for quality and rarity — Calcutta Records specializes in sourcing these.

Though harder to find, niche stores like Calcutta Records offer curated selections of vintage cassette tapes and CDs, including international and Indian releases. Look for sellers who test tapes and grade CD condition to avoid playback issues.

Yes — cassettes are popular again for lo-fi charm and nostalgic value. CDs are appreciated for digital clarity and affordable collecting. Both formats are being reissued and collected worldwide, especially in indie, hip-hop, and underground scenes.

For vinyl, use a turntable with a clean stylus and balanced tonearm. For CDs, avoid scratches and use a working tray loader. For cassettes, use a deck with good azimuth alignment. Calcutta Records also stocks select players and accessories.

Look for sellers who specialize in genres, countries (like Japanese pressings), or limited-edition runs. Follow their Instagram or newsletter — Calcutta Records regularly updates its feed with unique finds and restocks.

Not yet — Calcutta Records is an online-only store based in India, shipping globally. Orders are packed with collector care and graded transparently for trust.
