About Ben Webster

Ben Webster was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 27, 1909. He began his musical journey with violin and piano, later taking up the tenor saxophone under the guidance of Budd Johnson. He cut his teeth playing with territory bands and in orchestras led by Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, and Fletcher Henderson before joining Duke Ellington’s orchestra in 1940. During his tenure with Ellington he soloed on classic numbers like “Cotton Tail,” helping to define the swing era sound. His personality could be volatile – stories circulated of friction with Ellington and a dramatic exit involving a razor and a jacket.
