About Ghulam Ali
Ghulam Ali was born on December 5, 1940 in the Sialkot district of what is now Pakistan, into a musically inclined family. From an early age, he was trained in classical traditions by his father and later by the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan along with his brothers, laying the foundation for his mastery over classical vocal technique. He began his professional career with Radio Pakistan in Lahore around 1960, which soon became the launchpad for his enduring legacy. Distinctively, Ghulam Ali’s music bridges the refined discipline of Hindustani classical ragas with the lyrical intensity of ghazals. He composes most of his renditions himself—often citing that up to 95% of his repertoire is self-composed—imbuing each performance with personal depth and warmth. His voice carries both technical precision and emotional maturity, creating an intimate bond with listeners across borders. Over the years, he has delivered haunting interpretations of ghazals like “Chupke Chupke Raat Din,” “Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa,” “Awaargi,” “Kal Chaudhvin Ki Raat Thi,” “Apni Dhun Mein Rehta Hoon,” and many more. His Bollywood breakthrough came with “Chupke Chupke Raat Din” in the film Nikaah (1982), and he later collaborated with Asha Bhosle, notably on the album “Meraj‑E‑Ghazal.” He also ventured into Nepali music, recording ghazals in Nepali with Narayan Gopal written by King Mahendra of Nepal, further expanding his cross-cultural appeal. Recipient of Pakistan’s prestigious Pride of Performance (1979) and Sitara‑i‑Imtiaz (2012), Ghulam Ali also earned the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Award in 2013 and the Swaralaya Global Legend Award in 2016. His legacy endures not just through recorded discs but also via live performances, including memorable concerts at iconic venues like the Taj Mahal, where he continues to enchant audiences and inspire future generations of ghazal lovers. In short, Ghulam Ali represents the soul of ghazal music—rooted in classical tradition, yet ever fluent in emotion and narrative. His enduring influence across South Asia and beyond makes his recordings treasured artifacts for any discerning music collector.
