What Are Japanese Pressing Vinyl Records?

A Japanese pressing is a vinyl record that was manufactured in Japan, typically in the 1970s–1990s. Japan developed a reputation for producing the highest quality vinyl pressings in the world — and that reputation is completely deserved.

Japanese record plants used virgin vinyl (no recycled material), operated with extremely low tolerances, and had rigorous quality control at every step. The result: quieter surfaces, better channel separation, superior dynamic range, and a clarity that even original pressings from the US or UK often can’t match.

The OBI Strip

Most Japanese pressings come with an OBI strip — a paper wraparound band (obi = sash in Japanese) that carries the album title, tracklisting, and catalog number in Japanese. OBI strips are highly prized by collectors because they confirm the pressing’s origin and add to the collectibility. A Japanese pressing with its original OBI strip in good condition commands a significant premium.

How to Identify a Genuine Japanese Pressing

  1. Matrix number — Japanese pressings have a matrix etched in the run-out groove that often ends in “JP” or contains Japanese characters
  2. OBI strip — The paper band around the sleeve with Japanese text. Not always present (some were removed), but strong confirmation when there
  3. Label text — The inner label often has both English and Japanese text, plus a Japanese catalog number (e.g., “EMS” series for EMI Japan)
  4. Country of manufacture — Look for “Made in Japan” or “Manufactured in Japan” printed on the sleeve or label

Every Japanese pressing we list comes with full details — we note whether the OBI is present, the condition of both record and sleeve, and the Japanese catalog number.
