About Doors

The Doors sprang from a fateful 1965 meeting between Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach, both UCLA film school alumni. Morrison’s poetic lyrics and Manzarek’s keyboard vision inspired them to recruit John Densmore and Robby Krieger. By late 1966, they crafted their bold early sound during performances at London Fog and Whisky a Go Go, securing an Elektra Records deal with producer Paul Rothchild. Their self-titled debut arrived in January 1967 and cracked the Billboard with "Light My Fire" while closing with the ominous, improvisational “The End.” They followed with acclaimed albums like Strange Days and L.A. Woman, blending blues, jazz and baroque instrumentation under Morrison’s theatrical stage presence. Their dark, erotic, improvisational style anticipated prog, gothic and art rock. Despite Morrison’s untimely death in 1971 in Paris, the band released two more albums and a posthumous project, *An American Prayer*, weaving Morrison’s poetry with new music. The Doors’ cultural impact endures: inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, awarded a Grammy lifetime achievement in 2007, and featured in the U.S. Library of Congress registry. Their legacy remains potent. Morrison’s Lizard King persona continues to inspire generations, while the band’s distinct fusion of poetry, keyboard-driven melodies, and dramatic performance keep them pivotal in rock history. Revival waves—from the *Apocalypse Now* soundtrack to Oliver Stone’s 1991 film—have renewed interest in their catalog time and again.
