About Sam Cooke

Born Samuel Cook in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 1931, Sam Cooke grew up in Chicago in a family led by his minister father. He began singing in choir and performing with his siblings as a child, and by age 15 he was fronting the teenage gospel group the Highway Q.C.’s. In 1950, he was handpicked to join the legendary Soul Stirrers, where his ethereal, soaring gospel voice quickly made him a standout figure in the genre. In 1957, Cooke audaciously crossed over into secular music, adopting the stage name "Sam Cooke" and releasing his first hit, “You Send Me.” His smooth crooning signaled the birth of a new era in soul and pop. Over the next several years he charted numerous hits—“Chain Gang,” “Wonderful World,” “Twistin’ the Night Away”—and released acclaimed albums like Night Beat (1963) and Ain’t That Good News (1964). Alongside his artistry, Cooke demonstrated keen business acumen, founding SAR Records and Kags Music to gain control over his recordings and publishing. Cooke’s songwriting was marked by melodic grace and emotional depth, balancing romantic themes with spiritual undertones. Songs like “Bring It On Home to Me” and “A Change Is Gonna Come” captured both personal longing and broader social consciousness. That latter song, released posthumously, became an anthem of the civil rights movement, emblematic of hope and resilience. Tragically, Cooke’s life was cut short in 1964 at just 33 years old. Yet his legacy endures—inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He influenced countless artists, from Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye to modern voices across genres. Today, his work remains a cornerstone of soul and popular music, celebrated for its timeless beauty and pioneering spirit.
