About Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar was born Abhas Kumar Ganguly on August 4, 1929, in Khandwa, British India, and grew up in a Bengali family. His elder brother, Ashok Kumar, was already a star in Hindi cinema, and Kishore initially joined Bombay Talkies as a chorus singer before making his acting debut with the film Shikari (1946). Over time, he adopted the name Kishore Kumar and acted in hits like Andolan (1951) and the cult classic Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). Though self-taught, Kishore’s musical instincts were soon noticed by composer S. D. Burman, who encouraged him to develop his own style rather than imitate K. L. Saigal. That guidance bore fruit: he went on to record thousands of songs, showcasing a breathtaking range—from soulful romantic ballads and semi-classical numbers to joyous comic tracks infused with his signature yodeling. He excelled across genres and languages, leaving an indelible mark on Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and other regional music scenes. Kishore’s collaborations read like a who’s who of Bollywood’s golden era—he lent his voice to top actors such as Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, and many others. Among his most famous songs are “Gaata Rahe Mera Dil,” “Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka,” “Chingari Koi Bhadke,” and “Ek Chatur Naar.” He also directed and composed for films like Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein (1964), blending his artistic talents both behind the camera and in the recording booth. His work earned him eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer—a record in its category—and widespread adoration. Even after his passing on October 13, 1987, Kishore Kumar’s influence endured. His emotive singing, comic timing, and musical versatility inspired generations of vocalists. Tributes abound—from theatrical musicals to statues and commemorative events. Kishore remains a cultural touchstone: a voice that once filled cinemas now resonates eternally with fans and collectors across the world.
