About S. D. Burman

Born into Tripura’s royal family in 1906, S. D. Burman spent his early years in Comilla and Agartala, nurtured by a rich folk and classical music environment. After brief schooling and a stint at Calcutta University, he surrendered academia to train under maestros such as K. C. Dey, Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay, Badal Khan and Ustad Allauddin Khan. By the 1930s he had become a prominent radio singer and composer for Bengali theatre and films, earning accolades like a gold medal at the All India Music Conference in 1934. In 1944, Burman moved to Bombay at Filmistan’s invitation, making his Hindi film debut with Do Bhai (1947), featuring the breakthrough song “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya”. During the 1950s and ’60s he established a fruitful collaboration with Dev Anand and Navketan Productions, composing for such classics as Baazi, Taxi Driver, Pyaasa, Guide and Sujata. A masterful blend of folk melodies with Western instrumentation and jazz sensibilities became his hallmark. Burman’s musical style was both eclectic and rooted—he brought East Bengali folk tunes, thumri, bhatiyali and the everyday sounds of life into mainstream film music. His voice—thin yet poignant—lent a bardic quality to songs like “Wahan Kaun Hai Tera” (Guide) and “Safal Hogi Teri Aradhana” (Aradhana), the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1970. He received numerous awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Filmfare Awards, Padma Shri and a posthumous commemorative postage stamp. In the 1970s, even as ill health set in, Burman continued to deliver memorable scores in films like Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, and Mili—a testament to his enduring creative spirit. His close working relationships with singers such as Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi are the stuff of Bollywood legend. S. D. Burman’s legacy endures in the work of his son R. D. Burman, the next generation’s musical genius, and in the countless composers he inspired. His melodies live on—evoking nostalgia, emotion, and the timeless heart of Indian cinema.
