About Lata Mangeshkar
Lata Mangeshkar was born Hema Mangeshkar on 28 September 1929 in Indore, and her remarkable journey began under her father’s tutelage in music. Raised in a family of theatre artists, she made her breakthrough in late 1940s Hindi cinema with haunting songs like “Aayega Aane Wala” (Mahal, 1949), which instantly captured public imagination. From there, she became a firm favourite with eminent music directors of the 1950s, including Naushad, Shankar‑Jaikishan, S.D. Burman and C. Ramchandra. She brought raga-rooted and filmi melodies alike to life with unmatched devotion and clarity. Her musical style was a seamless blend of classical finesse and emotional subtlety, which made her voice perfectly suited across genres—from filmi and bhajans to ghazals, folk traditions and sufi. She ventured confidently into regional music too, lending her voice to Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and other linguistic traditions. Songs such as “Lag Jaa Gale” (Woh Kaun Thi?, 1964), “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya” (Mughal‑e‑Azam, 1960), and the patriotic “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon” (1963) display her range—from romantic yearning to national soul-stirring. Her career shimmered with accolades: multiple national and state awards, including the Filmfare Awards, National Film Awards, Maharashtra State honours, and India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 2001. Guinness World Records once noted her as the most recorded artist, with tens of thousands of songs across decades and languages. Her only Malayalam song, charitable concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and her late-career contributions to films like Veer‑Zaara and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham reflect a legacy that never dimmed. Lata Mangeshkar’s influence reaches far beyond statistics. She defined an entire era of Indian music, serving as the definitive playback voice for generations of actresses and resonating across borders and cultures. Her songs continue to echo in households and hearts alike, and her title as the "Voice of the Millennium" wasn’t merely honorary—it was earned—and remains cherished.
