About Stan Getz

Stanley Gayetzki—known to the world as Stan Getz—was born in Philadelphia in 1927 and emerged as a teenage prodigy, performing professionally by age 15. He rose to prominence as one of the celebrated “Four Brothers” saxophonists in Woody Herman’s Second Herd during the late 1940s, shaping the sound of cool jazz with his ethereal, Lester Young–inspired tone. In the 1950s, Getz led his own ensembles featuring such artists as Horace Silver and Jimmy Raney, recorded notable tracks like the chart-topping "Moonlight in Vermont," and issued acclaimed albums including West Coast Jazz and The Steamer. A sojourn in Europe from 1958 to 1961 invigorated his artistry and prepared him for his next act. Returning to the U.S., Getz recorded Focus with string arrangements by Eddie Sauter, and then, in the early 1960s, embraced Brazilian rhythms in collaborations such as Jazz Samba and Big Band Bossa Nova. His partnership with João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim yielded Getz/Gilberto, which included the iconic “The Girl from Ipanema” and earned him multiple Grammy Awards. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Getz explored jazz fusion, particularly in albums like Sweet Rain and Captain Marvel, working with luminaries like Chick Corea, Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, and Tony Williams. By the 1980s, he had returned to acoustic jazz and served as artist‑in‑residence at Stanford University, teaching and performing until his death in 1991. Getz’s legacy endures in the lyrical beauty of his playing, his role in bringing bossa nova to global audiences, and his influence on generations of tenor saxophonists. His sound remains a hallmark of melodic jazz expression.
