1939-1940 - Lester Young Used Vinyl LP Record

Lester Young’s 1939-1940 sessions catch him in that sweet early stride: tone like cooled honey, phrases landing just behind the beat, and a band that actually gives him room to stretch. This Jazz Archives 1978 pressing has a record in Very Good Minus condition and a cover in Very Good Minus as well—handled, but clearly cared for. Expect a little surface chatter in the quiet spots, the kind that reminds you this isn’t a playlist, it’s history spinning under a stylus.

You get pre-war swing with a modern brain: lines that later sax players quietly stole, and rhythms that still make your foot move without asking permission. If you’re building a serious jazz shelf, this fills a crucial chapter between Kansas City nights and postwar cool. If you already love Pres, it’s a chance to hear him young, sharp, and slightly dangerous.
