Born in Paris, Eric Séva grew up in a family where art was omnipresent. Neighbor and friend of the cartoonist Cabu, he was introduced to music by his father, who was a saxophonist. At the age of five, he started with the recorder and then took up the saxophone at eleven. He entered the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris under the direction of Pierre Petit and graduated with an advanced degree as a saxophone concert performer and a higher diploma in chamber music. These six years of classical study allowed him to lay the foundations to later explore the rules and codes that govern the worlds of improvisation. In 1989, he met Dave Liebman in Paris and went to New York in 1990 to study under the American saxophonist. He returned with the conviction that every musician must cultivate their uniqueness to find their own path, making him one of the most active solo saxophonists on the French scene, bridging the gap between the tradition of his musical heritage and the modernity of a certain experience. As an authentic eclectic colorist of jazz, he has recorded over 100 albums. For 30 years, he has engaged in collaborations with other musicians, cultures, and sounds. Séva has built a reputation alongside numerous jazzmen and also with artists from the world of song or pop, including Chris Réa (European tour), Didier Lockwood in a quintet for three years, Sylvain Luc, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Legrand, Khalil Chahine, David Sanborn, David Krakauer, Fred Wesley, Thomas Fersen, Céline Dion, Dick Annegarn, Jean-Michel Jarre, Henri Salvador, Maxime Le Forestier... International tours have taken him all around the world, in Europe, Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Japan), the Middle East, and Latin America. He served as a soloist in Franck Tortiller's National Jazz Orchestra from 2005 to 2008. There is little doubt, in the course of his career, that Eric Séva belongs to the category of meticulous and inspired artists. Universally praised by the press, the eight albums he has composed, arranged, and recorded as a leader reveal a spectacular progression: 2005's ‘Folklores Imaginaires,’ 2009's ‘Espace Croisés,’ 2015's ‘Nomade Sonore,’ 2017's ‘Body and Blues,’ 2020's ‘Mother of Pearl,’ 2021's ‘Résonances,’ 2022's ‘Adeo,’ and 2023's ‘Frères de Songs,’. While Eric has always prioritized jazz and improvisation in his journey, it is precisely because of their essence of blending and freedom that he is an artist of a different kind, colored by diversity and encounters. It's no surprise, then, to discover that words like crossing, intersection, or blending run through his projects and compositions. An artist committed to the performing arts, he is a co-founder of the ‘Jazz &; Garonne’ festival in Lot-et-Garonne, which just concluded its 13th edition in October 2023.
