Charles Lloyd – Sangam & Friends (Blue Note) - Brand New - Vinyl LP Record (Quick Ship)

Sangam & Friends (Blue Note) finds Charles Lloyd still searching, still listening, and still refusing to coast on his legend. Now deep into his elder-statesman phase, Lloyd treats the saxophone not as a vehicle for virtuosity, but as a voice for wonder, doubt, and hard-won joy. The Sangam concept—his long-running, percussion-rich trio—opens the music up rhythmically, giving every track a sense of ceremony and movement, while the “Friends” in the title hints at a revolving door of collaborators who color the sound without ever crowding it.

You hear the Blue Note touch in the recording: air around the cymbals, warmth in the low end, and a front-row seat to Lloyd’s breath and grain. The music leans into modal vamps, folk-tinged melodies, and wide-open improvisations that feel less like solos and more like conversations among equals. It’s jazz that remembers its spiritual 1960s roots but speaks in the language of right now.

For a vinyl collection, this is one of those late-period statements that will age beautifully: a document of an artist who has nothing left to prove, and therefore plays only what matters. Put it on when you want depth, not just background sound.
