With The Proust Album, pianist Shani Diluka evokes the musical world of Marcel Proust and his epoch-making novel A la recherche du temps perdu. She has selected works by composers of personal importance to the author (who was born in 1871 and died in 1922) or who feature in his inexhaustible text.

The centrepiece is Reynaldo Hahn’s enchanting but rarely heard Piano Concerto in E. It was premiered in 1931, with Hahn himself conducting, in Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Élysées – where Diluka recorded it with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris and conductor Hervé Niquet. The Venezuelan-born composer, at one time Proust’s lover, remained among the writer’s closest friends.

Complementing the concerto are songs by Fauré, interpreted by soprano Natalie Dessay; solo piano pieces by Debussy, Fauré, Massenet, Wagner, Strauss and Gluck (arranged by Wilhelm Kempff); and a ‘reconstruction’ of the emblematic violin sonata by the fictional composer Vinteuil, a character in A la recherche du temps perdu. Pierre Fouchenneret partners Diluka in its three ‘movements’ – in fact independent pieces written by Hahn, Eugène Ysaÿe and Cécile Chaminade.

There is also a reading by actor Guillaume Gallienne of the most celebrated episode in Proust’s masterpiece: tasting a madeleine cake dipped in lime tea, the narrator starts to rediscover his past. “There are subtle analogies between music and Proust’s writing,” says Shani Diluka. “I hope that, in its own way, this album will act as a kind of madeleine for the listener.”
