About Antonio Carlos Jobim
Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim was born on January 25, 1927, in the Tijuca neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Raised largely by his mother after his parents’ separation, he discovered music early when his stepfather gifted him a piano. Though initially unenthusiastic—he even described the piano as “girly”—he was encouraged by his stepfather to pursue music, later studying with classical and avant‑garde teachers and drawing early inspiration from Brazilian greats like Pixinguinha and Ary Barroso. His youth in sunlit Ipanema infused his work with a vivid sense of place and nature. Jobim’s early career unfolded in Rio’s vibrant club scene and recording studios. He worked as an arranger before composing for the 1956 play Orfeu da Conceição. His collaboration with Vinícius de Moraes led to the score for the internationally acclaimed film Black Orpheus, introducing songs like “A felicidade.” The release of João Gilberto’s 1958 rendition of Jobim’s “Chega de Saudade” ignited the bossa nova movement, a modern, intimate take on samba that would soon captivate the world. The early 1960s brought Jobim international fame. He co-created the seminal album Getz/Gilberto with Stan Getz and João Gilberto; the record won multiple Grammys and turned “The Girl from Ipanema” into a global sensation. Other signature songs—such as “Desafinado,” “Corcovado,” “Wave,” “Dindi” and “Águas de Março”—further showcased his melodic sophistication and emotional subtlety. Jobim also worked with Frank Sinatra on a celebrated 1967 album blending bossa nova and American songcraft. Through the decades, Jobim’s music expanded into classical compositions, film scores and solo recordings, culminating in albums like Stone Flower and Tide that highlighted his adventurous spirit. Even after his death in 1994, his legacy endures through the countless covers of his songs and the ongoing influence of bossa nova in global music. Jobim’s legacy is one of gentle revolution—creating a genre that transformed Brazilian music into a universal language, inviting listeners into a world of soft sophistication, sunlit melancholy and ever‑flowing melody.
