Art Blakey, born in Pittsburgh in 1919, was a self‑taught pianist-turned-drummer who rose to prominence in the 1940s, performing with big bands such as those led by Mary Lou Williams, Fletcher Henderson, and Billy Eckstine. His switch to drums—more dramatic than accidental—set in motion his path toward becoming one of hard bop’s defining voices. After a musical and spiritual journey in West Africa, he briefly adopted the name Abdullah ibn Buhaina, reflecting his early conversion to Islam. In the mid‑1950s, Blakey co‑founded the Jazz Messengers alongside pianist Horace Silver. The group evolved into the definitive hard bop ensemble—blues-tinged, rhythmic, rooted in gospel, yet fiercely inventive.
