About Cerrone

Marc Cerrone, born in Vitry‑sur‑Seine in 1952 to Italian‑immigrant parents, first took up drums at the age of 12. Despite his father’s discouragement, he immersed himself in the sounds of Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Blood, Sweat & Tears. By 17, he had boldly approached Club Med founder Gilbert Trigano and convinced him to hire rock bands—thus launching Cerrone’s music journey as an A&R scout for Club Med’s global villages. In the early 1970s, Cerrone made his recording debut with the Afro‑rock band Kongas. Their single “Boom,” followed by the disco favorite “Anikana‑O,” found a broader audience in the U.S. after a Tom Moulton remix on Salsoul Records. This early exposure paved the way for Cerrone’s solo career. His solo breakout arrived in 1976 with Love in C Minor—produced on his own label Malligator—whose risqué cover and irresistible grooves captured the attention of New York DJs and led to Cerrone signing with Atlantic Records. The single sold millions and became emblematic of the Studio 54 era. He followed this with Cerrone’s Paradise and 1977’s Supernature, the latter fusing lush orchestration, pulsing synths, and a sci‑fi narrative, and earning him six Billboard Disco Forum awards, including Disco Artist of the Year. Through the late ’70s and early ’80s, Cerrone continued releasing a series of numbered albums—Cerrone IV: The Golden Touch, Angelina, Panic, and more—that showcased his evolving blend of disco, funk, and electronic elements. He even ventured into Broadway with Dreamtime in the early ’90s and composed large-scale concert spectacles across the globe. His later works include dance albums like Hysteria (2002), Celebrate! (2007), and Red Lips (2016). Beyond his own releases, Cerrone’s legacy looms large in electronic music. He’s been sampled or remixed by Daft Punk, Bob Sinclar, Beastie Boys, Run‑DMC, and the Avalanches. Nu‑disco artists and French‑touch producers like Daft Punk, Justice, Air, and Bob Sinclar openly cite him as a key influence. A recent documentary, Cerrone, Supernature, paints him as an instinctive autodidact who, at age 73, still commands electrifying performances. His track “Supernature” even featured in the 2024 Paris Olympic opening ceremony, complete with a light show beaming from the Eiffel Tower.
