About Chick Corea
Born in 1941 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Chick Corea grew up immersed in music—his father was a Dixieland band trumpeter who introduced him to piano at age four. After studying with a classical teacher, Corea quickly gravitated toward jazz, launching his professional career in the early 1960s with renowned bands including those led by Mongo Santamaría, Willie Bobo, Blue Mitchell, Herbie Mann, and Stan Getz. His debut as a leader came in 1966 with Tones for Joan’s Bones, and by 1968 he released Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, a trio classic with Miroslav Vitouš and Roy Haynes. In the late 1960s, Corea joined Miles Davis’s band and played a pivotal role in the birth of jazz fusion, contributing to transformative albums like In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. In the early 1970s, he formed Return to Forever, an electrifying fusion ensemble that incorporated Latin rhythms and synthesizers and produced landmark albums such as Romantic Warrior, Where Have I Known You Before, and No Mystery. Alongside his fusion projects, Corea maintained a deep connection to acoustic jazz, classical influences, and duo formats. He collaborated extensively with vibraphonist Gary Burton (e.g., Crystal Silence), explored solo and duo piano works, and later led bands like the Elektric Band and the Akoustic Band. In his later years, he continued to innovate—teaming with Béla Fleck, reuniting Return to Forever, and recording Latin jazz with his Spanish Heart Band, earning numerous Grammy Awards and being named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Chick Corea’s legacy is immense: his melodic strength, technical brilliance, and genre-blurring curiosity inspired generations of pianists. His compositions like “Spain” and “Windows” became standards. Across a career spanning five decades, he garnered an extraordinary number of Grammy Awards and hall-of-fame honours, and cemented his place as one of the most imaginative and beloved figures in jazz history.
