About Emerson Lake & Palmer
Emerson, Lake & Palmer first emerged in London in 1970, a meeting of three seasoned musicians from notable bands. Keith Emerson came from The Nice, Greg Lake from King Crimson, and Carl Palmer from Atomic Rooster. Their debut was bold and theatrical—their Moog synthesizer‑laden live set at the Isle of Wight Festival in August of that year helped launch them into the limelight and kick‑started a run of UK top‑five albums, including their self‑titled debut and Tarkus. They carved out a musical niche with a daring blend of influences. Emerson’s virtuosic use of Hammond organ, piano, and Moog synthesizer blended with Lake’s melodic songwriting and vocals, and Palmer’s precise drumming. Their sound blended ambitious original compositions and art‑rock arrangements of classical pieces—ranging from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man—set against jazz‑rock and symphonic backdrops. Notable albums include Trilogy (1972), featuring the acoustic ballad “From the Beginning” and the wild “Hoedown,” and Brain Salad Surgery (1973), often viewed as their masterpiece, with the epic “Karn Evil 9” and the dramatic “Toccata.” These works underscored their technical prowess and theatrical ambition and cemented their reputation as progressive rock icons. After a period of prolific output in the 1970s, including Works Volumes and Love Beach, the band disbanded in 1979. They reunited in the early 1990s with the album Black Moon in 1992, though the reunion never quite matched their 1970s peak. Nonetheless, their legacy endures—they shaped the sound of prog‑rock and influenced generations of musicians drawn to expansive, genre‑bending composition and performance.
