About Julie London
Julie London (born Julie Peck on September 26, 1926, in Santa Rosa, California) grew up the only child of a vaudeville song‑and‑dance duo. She made her earliest singing appearances on her parents’ radio show, and in her teens performed in Los Angeles nightclubs while attending Hollywood Professional School. Her early forays into acting led to a 1944 film debut, and by the late 1940s she had landed roles in films such as Task Force and Return of the Frontiersman. Musically, London emerged as a torch singer whose breathy, smoky contralto stood out in the era’s transition from big‑band swing to intimate jazz‑pop. Her debut album, Julie Is Her Name (1955), featured bare‑bones accompaniment—just guitar and bass—and introduced “Cry Me a River,” which quickly became her signature song and remains a timeless standard in the American Songbook. Over the next decade and a half, she released more than thirty albums of jazz and traditional pop standards, including favorites like Lonely Girl (1956), Around Midnight (1960), and All Through the Night: Julie London Sings the Choicest of Cole Porter (1965). Alongside her singing career, London maintained a successful acting presence. In the 1950s she appeared in films such as The Girl Can't Help It and Man of the West, and in the 1970s she earned television fame starring as Nurse Dixie McCall on the medical drama Emergency! (1972–1979). Her cool sophistication and understated charisma made her a memorable screen presence. London’s influence endures in her minimalistic approach and evocative vocals, cited as inspiration by contemporary artists who favor a subtle, intimate style. Her version of “Cry Me a River” has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and is featured in numerous films and retrospectives. Reissues of albums like Julie…At Home and Around Midnight continue to introduce new generations to her hushed elegance and timeless appeal.
