About Kazi Nazrul Islam

Born in 1899 in Churulia, then Bengal Presidency, Kazi Nazrul Islam rose from humble beginnings—helping care for a mausoleum and performing folk theater—to serve briefly in the British Indian Army. After leaving the military around 1920, he moved to Calcutta, where he emerged on the literary scene, publishing his first novel serially and then the incendiary poem “Bidrohi” in 1922, earning the title "Rebel Poet" and inspiring anti-colonial fervor. Nazrul’s musical genius shines most brilliantly in Nazrul Geeti—a vast repertoire of songs numbering in the thousands. He wove together a rare tapestry of styles: rousing revolutionary anthems like “Pralayollas,” devotional bhajans and kirtans, ghazals in Bengali, qawwali and Shyama Sangeet, as well as folk melodies such as Baul, Jhumur, and Bhatiali. His musical voice was both secular and spiritual, transcending communal boundaries. Beyond songs, Nazrul contributed to Bengali cultural life as a playwright, journalist, and early film music director. He acted, directed, and composed music for the mythological film “Dhruba” in 1934, becoming one of the first Muslim directors in Bengali cinema. He also worked in radio and theatre, producing significant programs and essays on modern literature and music. Despite his wide acclaim—he received the Jagattarini Medal, Padma Bhushan, and posthumously became Bangladesh’s national poet—Nazrul's later life was afflicted by Pick’s disease, which robbed him of speech and memory by 1942. He relocated to Dhaka in 1972 and died in 1976. His legacy endures worldwide in institutions bearing his name, ongoing scholarship, and the timeless music and literature that celebrate rebellion, humanism, and unity.
