About Mehdi Hassan

Born in Luna, Rajasthan, in 1927, Mehdi Hassan descended from a long line of Kalawant musicians. He began rigorous classical training under his father and uncle at a very early age, mastering dhrupad, thumri, khayal, and dadra by his late teens. His first performance for royalty came when he was merely eight, setting the stage for a lifelong devotion to music. After the partition of India in 1947, he migrated to Pakistan with his family, facing severe financial hardships and working odd jobs while maintaining an unwavering practice regimen. His breakthrough came in the early 1950s through performances on Radio Pakistan, and by the mid‑1950s he had debuted in playback singing. He blew audiences away with ghazals rooted firmly in classical ragas, especially when he rendered Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s “Gulon Mein Rang Bhare” for the film Farangi. His deep, resonant voice and poetic sensitivity earned him the imperial title “Shahenshah‑e‑Ghazal.” He also recorded a moving late‑career duet with Lata Mangeshkar, bridging decades and borders. Mehdi Hassan’s career spanned hundreds of film songs and innumerable ghazal recordings. His albums—ranging from classical ghazals to live concerts—introduced new audiences to ghazal singing with emotional depth and classical finesse. Notable works include “Ranjish Hi Sahi,” “Dil Jo Rota Hai,” as well as albums like "Classical Ghazals" and compilations such as "Golden Collection of Mehdi Hassan." His artistry set the bar for lyrical enunciation and raga integrity in ghazal performance. Legacy is the word that defines him. Revered across South Asia, he inspired ghazal legends like Jagjit Singh and moved the great Lata Mangeshkar to call him the voice of God. He received Pakistan’s highest civilian honors—Pride of Performance, Tamgha‑e‑Imtiaz, Hilal‑e‑Imtiaz, and Nishan‑e‑Imtiaz—and accolades from India and Nepal. His work continues to be cherished by devotees of Urdu poetry and classical melody alike, and he remains a cornerstone in the world of ghazal singing.
