About Osibisa

Osibisa emerged in London in the late 1960s when Teddy Osei, Sol Amarfio, Mac Tontoh and other West African and Caribbean musicians united to forge a sound that celebrated ‘criss‑cross rhythms that explode with happiness.’ The name comes from the Fante word for highlife, “osibisaba.” The band quickly gained traction on London’s club scene, leading to a deal with MCA and the release of their self‑titled debut in 1971, produced by Tony Visconti with iconic artwork by Roger Dean. Their musical palette was rich and eclectic—an exuberant blend of Ghanaian highlife, Afro‑rock, progressive rock, jazz, funk, calypso, Latin, and soul. The flying‑elephant motif, prominent on their early covers, became an emblem of their joyful, genre‑defying style. Their second album, Woyaya, released in the same year, featured the timeless title track, later covered by artists such as Art Garfunkel and used as a signature on Ghanaian television. Throughout the 1970s, Osibisa toured extensively, drawing large international audiences across Europe, North America, Asia, India and Africa. Their singles “Sunshine Day” (UK No.17) and “Dance the Body Music” (UK No.31) brought them chart success, while albums like Osibirock continued to showcase their evolving sound. Later decades saw them return to recording with albums like Monsore (1995), Osee Yee (2009) and New Dawn (2021). Founding members also fostered musical development back in Ghana by establishing studios and academies. The legacy of Osibisa resonates in the wider world‑music arena: they were among the first African‑heritage bands to break through globally, paving the way for Afro‑rock and world music as mainstream genres. Their lively cross‑cultural fusion inspired subsequent generations of African and diasporic artists. Even decades on, their joyful energy and fearless fusion continue to attract vinyl and CD collectors—a testament to their timeless spirit.
