About Shiv Hari

Shiv‑Hari’s story begins in 1967 with Call of the Valley, a luminous concept album featuring Brij Bhushan Kabra on guitar alongside Sharma’s Santoor and Chaurasia’s flute. It stirred considerable attention in Western classical circles and remains one of Indian classical music’s most successful recordings. That landmark collaboration marked the start of a deep musical kinship built on mutual respect and innovation. In the early 1980s, Yash Chopra invited the duo to compose for his film Silsila (1981), launching Shiv‑Hari’s entrée into Bollywood. Their music—simple yet profound—revived melody-centric film songs in an era often dominated by beats. Over the next decade, Shiv‑Hari scored seven more Chopra productions—Faasle, Vijay, Chandni, Lamhe, Parampara, Sahibaan, and Darr—earning multiple Filmfare nominations while weaving classical sensibility into romantic narratives. Their signature was a seamless fusion of Hindustani instruments with cinematic orchestration—Santoor, bansuri, folk percussion, jazz motifs—creating textured soundscapes that carried emotional weight. Songs like Rang Barse, Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Choodiyan, and Jadoo Teri Nazar aren’t just film hits; they’ve become seasonal and cultural staples across generations. Though their Bollywood phase was relatively brief, Shiv‑Hari’s legacy endures in classical concert halls and nostalgic playlists alike. They continued touring—London, Singapore and beyond—celebrated as classical ambassadors. With Shivkumar Sharma’s passing in May 2022, the duo’s chapter closed, yet their music continues to resonate among aficionados and casual listeners alike as sublime testaments to India’s rich melodic heritage.
