About Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins on May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan. Blind shortly after birth due to retinopathy of prematurity, he moved with his family to Detroit where he began singing in church choirs and teaching himself piano, harmonica, and drums. At just 11 years old, Wonder was discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles and signed to Motown’s Tamla label under the name “Little Stevie Wonder,” launching a recording career that began with early hits such as “Fingertips (Part 2).” His musical style evolved throughout the 1960s and early ’70s into a distinctive fusion of soul, pop, funk and progressive R&B. Wonder’s creative breakthrough came when he gained unprecedented artistic control at Motown, working with electronic innovators and pushing the boundaries of synthesizer use in albums like Music of My Mind and Talking Book. The clavinet-driven funk groove of “Superstition” remains one of his signature sounds, emblematic of his innovative spark. The mid‑1970s marked Stevie Wonder’s creative peak with the release of Innervisions (1973), Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974), and the double‑album Songs in the Key of Life (1976)—each earning Album of the Year Grammys and producing timeless songs like “Living for the City,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” and “Isn’t She Lovely.” His reach expanded beyond music: he earned an Academy Award for “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” inspired activism for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and earned honors including induction into multiple halls of fame. Across a career spanning over six decades, Stevie Wonder remains a towering figure in contemporary music. As a virtuoso performer and recording artist, he transformed the role of the multi‑instrumentalist and helped shape the album as an art form in soul and R&B. His humanitarian voice, technical inventiveness, and emotionally rich compositions continue to inspire generations of artists and delight listeners worldwide.
