About Wes Montgomery
Wes Montgomery’s story begins in Indianapolis, where he was born in 1923. He was largely self-taught, inspired in his late teens by the recordings of Charlie Christian, and developed a highly personal thumb-picking style. Montgomery juggled day jobs—he worked as a welder—with playing gigs at night, before his talent was discovered by Cannonball Adderley in 1959, launching a recording career under Riverside Records. Montgomery’s musical style was distinctive: he eschewed the guitar pick in favor of using the fleshy part of his thumb, producing a softer, rounded tone; he also pioneered the use of octaves and chordal solos. Early works such as The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, So Much Guitar!, and Full House are celebrated for showcasing his refined technique and creative improvisation. By the mid-1960s, under producer Creed Taylor at Verve and later A&M, Montgomery transitioned toward more pop-oriented, orchestral instrumental albums. Records like Movin’ Wes, Bumpin’, and his interpretation of popular tunes broadened his audience, yielding both commercial success and Grammy recognition. Even in this crossover phase, he retained his melodic integrity and soulful touch. Though his career was tragically cut short by a heart attack in 1968 at age 45, Wes Montgomery’s legacy endures. He remains a foundational jazz guitarist whose innovations continue to inspire players from jazz fusion to smooth jazz, and his fingerprint is seen on the work of artists like George Benson and many others.
