About Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas, in 1933 and raised by his grandparents after his parents left early in his life. His grandfather gave him his first guitar at age six, and by ten he was playing at local dances. In his early career he worked as a DJ and struggled with small record deals before joining Ray Price’s band in Nashville in 1961 and writing major hits for others such as “Crazy,” “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and “Hello Walls.” In the early 1970s, Nelson struck out on his own, moving back to Texas where he became a leading light of the outlaw country movement. His 1975 album "Red Headed Stranger," featuring "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," established his unique artistic identity. He followed it with the genre‑blurring "Stardust" (1978), a collection of pop and jazz standards that broadened his audience. His self‑assured, off‑beat phrasing, gut‑string guitar and idiosyncratic voice became his trademarks. Throughout his long career Nelson released notable albums such as “Always on My Mind,” duets like “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” and movie tunes like “On the Road Again.” He also co‑founded Farm Aid in 1985 to support family farmers and recorded prolifically—from early works through recent albums like 2024’s "The Border." His numerous awards include multiple Grammys, induction into the Country and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame, Kennedy Center and Gershwin honors. Nelson’s legacy is vast: as a bridge between traditional country and wider genres, as a voice for artistic freedom, and as a symbol of resilience and integrity in music. Even now he continues to record, tour, and inspire new generations through his heartfelt and boundary‑crossing artistry.
