The golden era of Hindi film music — roughly 1955 through 1985 — produced some of the finest popular music recordings anywhere in the world. On vinyl, the best Hindi Bollywood records carry an analog warmth and an emotional directness that decades of cassette copies and MP3s have diluted. Starting a Bollywood vinyl collection in India is one of the most rewarding things a music lover can do, and at Calcutta Records we carry over 2,000 Hindi film music titles to help you do it right.
There is nothing quite like dropping the needle on an original HMV India pressing of a Kishore Kumar and R.D. Burman collaboration. The orchestral depth of “Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai” from Kati Patang, the raw energy of “Dum Maro Dum” from Hare Rama Hare Krishna, the heartbreaking beauty of “Roop Tera Mastana” — on original vinyl, these songs play at a fidelity that their reputation fully deserves but that modern digital transfers rarely achieve.
The Composers Who Define Bollywood Vinyl
R.D. Burman (Pancham Da)
The most adventurous composer of the golden Bollywood era. His ability to blend Western rock, jazz, folk, and classical elements into Hindi film music was unprecedented. Essential LPs: Kati Patang (1971), Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), Amar Prem (1972), Sholay (1975). We carry Kati Patang at ₹2,999 and Shaan at ₹1,999. Full guide: R.D. Burman vinyl records.
Laxmikant-Pyarelal
The most prolific Bollywood composers — over 600 film scores between 1963 and 1998. Bobby (1973), Dost (1974), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) — their records are affordable and plentiful in the used market. Look for their HMV India pressings: many cost under ₹1,000 in VG condition and sound wonderful.
S.D. Burman
Pancham Da’s father, and one of the finest melodists in Bollywood history. His scores for Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), and Abhimaan (1973) represent the pre-rock era of Bollywood film music at its lyrical peak.
Kalyanji-Anandji
The composers behind some of Bollywood’s most iconic 1970s action films. Sholay (shared with R.D. Burman credits), Don (1978), Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978). Energetic, driving music that sounds great on big speakers.
The Essential Singers: Vinyl Recommendations
Kishore Kumar
India’s most versatile and beloved playback singer. Owning a Kishore Kumar LP is essential for any Bollywood collection. We carry the Entertainer Extraordinaire LP at ₹2,499 and Enchanting Hour at ₹1,999. Full guide: Kishore Kumar vinyl records.
Lata Mangeshkar
India’s greatest female voice in recorded music. Her HMV India pressings — bhajans, film songs, ghazals — are consistently beautiful on vinyl. We carry Meera Bhajans (₹1,499) and the extraordinary Live at Royal Albert Hall LP (₹1,499). Full guide: Lata Mangeshkar vinyl records.
Mohammed Rafi
The other great male voice of the golden era. Rafi’s range — from devotional to romantic to patriotic to comic — was extraordinary. Look for his original HMV India LPs: Ye Reshmi Zulfein, Suhaani Raat Dhal Chuki, Teri Tasveer. These are affordable and beautiful.

Hindi Bollywood on Vinyl: A Practical Buying Guide
- HMV India orange label (1960s–70s): The original pressing for most classic Bollywood soundtracks. Recognisable by the orange HMV label. These play beautifully when in VG+ condition.
- Budget entry points: Many HMV India pressings from the 1970s are available for ₹299–₹999 in playable condition. A great way to start collecting without significant investment.
- Film LPs vs. compilation LPs: Original film soundtrack LPs are the most authentic way to experience a particular composer’s work. Compilations are more practical if you want a range of songs.
- Cassettes as collectibles: Many Bollywood recordings were only ever released on cassette (particularly 1980s–90s material). We carry a large selection of original Indian cassettes for collectors who want these recordings in a physical format.
