For any serious collector of Bollywood vinyl records in India, R.D. Burman — known universally as Pancham Da — is the most essential composer to have in your collection. His work redefined Hindi film music between the late 1960s and early 1990s, blending Western rock, jazz, Latin rhythms, and folk elements into something entirely new. Buying R.D. Burman vinyl records in India is not just about nostalgia — it is about owning some of the most innovative music ever recorded in this country.
I grew up in Kolkata, and Pancham Da’s music was the soundtrack to every family gathering, every drive, every transistor radio in the neighbourhood. The first time I found a clean copy of Kati Patang on LP at a roadside stall in Gariahat, I felt like I had found treasure. We have been building our R.D. Burman collection at Calcutta Records ever since, tracking down original pressings from across India and abroad.
Why R.D. Burman’s Music Demands Vinyl
Pancham Da’s arrangements were dense, layered, and sonically adventurous. The orchestral depth of a song like “Dum Maro Dum” or the driving groove of “Mehbooba Mehbooba” loses critical texture in digital compression. On vinyl, the warmth of the original analog recording is preserved — you hear the room, the breath of the musicians, the physical presence of the orchestra. There is simply no substitute for the original LP format when listening to 1970s Bollywood.
Finding original Indian pressings in good condition requires patience, but the hunt is absolutely worth it. HMV and Polydor India pressed many of these albums with excellent quality, and a near-mint copy plays beautifully even fifty years later.
Essential R.D. Burman Albums to Collect
Kati Patang (1971)
One of the greatest Bollywood soundtracks ever recorded. “Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai”, “Meri Pyari Bindu”, “Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar Na Ho” — this album is Pancham Da at his most melodic and emotionally resonant. Kishore Kumar’s vocals are at their peak here. We carry the Kati Patang LP at ₹2,999 — a pre-owned copy graded VG, which means it plays beautifully.
Satte Pe Satta (1982)
One of the most fun Bollywood soundtracks of the 1980s, featuring the immortal “Pyar Hamen Kis Mod Pe Le Aaya”. The Satte Pe Satta CD is available at ₹399 — a very affordable way to own this classic.
Shaan (1980)
The action thriller with the unforgettable “Yaar Dost” and “Dil Mein Tum Ho”. Pancham Da’s rock-influenced arrangements are on full display here. Our Shaan LP is priced at ₹1,999.
Electrifying Dialogues from Kaalia
A slightly unusual collectible — a dialogue LP from the Amitabh Bachchan film Kaalia with Pancham Da’s music. The Electrifying Dialogues from Kaalia LP is ₹1,999, graded VG. A fascinating collector’s item that showcases the era’s film culture.
Apne Apne
A rarer find — an Apne Apne LP at just ₹299. A great entry point for new collectors who want to explore lesser-known Pancham Da soundtracks without breaking the bank.

Collecting Tips: R.D. Burman on Vinyl
- Look for HMV India pressings: Most original Bollywood LPs from the 1970s were pressed by HMV India (now Saregama). These are the closest to the original master recordings.
- Check for inner sleeve notes: Some original pressings came with lyric booklets — keep these intact as they add to the value.
- Grading matters: Surface noise on used Bollywood LPs is common. VG+ is ideal; VG is acceptable for casual listening.
- Pair with Kishore Kumar: Many of Pancham Da’s greatest hits feature Kishore Kumar vocals — check our Kishore Kumar vinyl guide for more.
