Queen is India’s most beloved classic rock band — a claim we make with confidence based on our store’s sales data and countless conversations with collectors. Freddie Mercury’s Indian heritage (his family was Parsi Zoroastrian, originally from Gujarat, and he was born in Zanzibar) gives Queen a special resonance in India that no other Western rock band fully shares. For collectors seeking Queen vinyl records in India, Calcutta Records offers one of the country’s finest curated selections — particularly our impressive collection of half-speed master reissues.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” introduced a generation of Indian listeners to the idea that rock music could be operatic, theatrical, and emotionally devastating all at once. When the Rami Malek film hit theatres in 2018, we saw a new generation of Queen fans arrive at Calcutta Records looking for vinyl. We have been building our Queen catalog ever since to meet that demand.
Why Half-Speed Masters Make Queen Sound Extraordinary
The Universal Music/Abbey Road half-speed master reissue series for Queen is one of the finest vinyl reissue programs ever undertaken. Half-speed mastering means the cutting lathe runs at half the normal speed, allowing the engineer to capture twice the high-frequency information from the master tape. The results are audibly superior: cymbals have more air, guitars have more bite, Roger Taylor’s drum kit sounds larger and more dynamic, and Freddie Mercury’s voice sits in the mix with a presence that is genuinely breathtaking. All four of our Queen half-speed reissues are outstanding.
Essential Queen Vinyl Records
A Night at the Opera (1975) — Half-Speed Master
The album that contains “Bohemian Rhapsody” — one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Side one opens with “Death on Two Legs” and closes with “’39”; side two contains the masterpiece. The A Night at the Opera Half-Speed Master LP is ₹5,461. In our opinion, this is the single most important Queen record to own on vinyl. Buy it sealed.
Sheer Heart Attack (1974) — Half-Speed Master
The album that established Queen as a force. “Killer Queen”, “Now I’m Here”, “Flick of the Wrist” — the range of styles on display is astonishing. This half-speed master reissue (sealed) is Sheer Heart Attack at ₹4,944. One of the best-sounding Queen records in our collection.
A Kind of Magic (1986) — Half-Speed Master
The album associated with the Highlander soundtrack, recorded at the height of Queen’s stadium-rock period. “One Vision”, “A Kind of Magic”, “Who Wants to Live Forever” — enormous anthemic rock at its finest. The A Kind of Magic Half-Speed Master LP is ₹5,134.
Bohemian Rhapsody (The Original Soundtrack, 2018)
The soundtrack to the biopic film, featuring remastered and live versions of Queen’s greatest hits compiled chronologically. A great entry point for new collectors or as a gift. The Bohemian Rhapsody OST LP (brand new) is ₹6,899.
Queen II (1974) — Pre-Owned
A deeply ambitious early Queen album, featuring the famous “White Side” and “Black Side” — Brian May’s guitar orchestrations at their most baroque and extraordinary. A pre-owned copy of Queen II LP is ₹7,299.
Hot Space (1982) — Brand New
Queen’s controversial funk-disco album — divisive among fans but historically fascinating as evidence of the band’s refusal to be categorised. “Under Pressure” (with David Bowie) appears here. Hot Space LP (brand new) is ₹5,199.

Freddie Mercury and India: A Special Connection
Farrokh Bulsara was born in Zanzibar but his family was Gujarati Parsi, and he spent much of his childhood in Panchgani, Maharashtra at a boarding school. His early musical education included Indian classical music and Bollywood film songs. You can hear traces of that early influence in his vocal ornamentation — the micro-tonal inflections, the dramatic operatic sweeps — that set him apart from every other rock vocalist. When Indian fans listen to Queen, they are often hearing an Indian cultural thread woven through the fabric of Western rock without always knowing it is there.
