About Yes
Yes formed in London in 1968, originally fronted by vocalist Jon Anderson and bassist Chris Squire. Early line‑ups shifted until stabilizing in the early 1970s with guitar virtuoso Steve Howe and keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman joining Anderson and Squire. That period yielded landmark albums like The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans, combining ambitious structures, sweeping melodies and Roger Dean’s iconic artwork. The band’s sound was built on intricate arrangements, odd time signatures and instrumental prowess—Squire’s melodic bass, Bruford and later White’s dynamic drumming, Howe’s ornate guitar and Wakeman’s classical keyboards created a richly layered tapestry. Yes blended folk, classical and jazz elements into their rock foundation, establishing the blueprint for symphonic progressive rock. In the 1980s Yes shifted toward a more radio‑friendly sound when Trevor Rabin led the group’s renewed configuration. The album 90125 produced their only US No.1 single, “Owner of a Lonely Heart.” Other successful releases included Big Generator. Despite changes and side projects (including the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe offshoot), Yes continued releasing music and touring through the 1990s and 2000s. In the 21st century, Yes remained active with albums like The Quest (2021) and Mirror to the Sky (2023), though original members eventually passed, including Chris Squire in 2015 and Alan White in 2022. Their legacy endures through ongoing tours, deluxe reissues, and their 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of progressive rock’s most influential acts.
