About Ennio Morricone

Born in Rome in 1928, Ennio Morricone showed his musical gifts early—composing at age six—and went on to study trumpet, composition and choral music at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Encouraged by his musician father, he swiftly completed harmony studies and, by the 1950s, was arranging for jazz bands and pop artists while also writing for radio and television. In 1961, he began composing under his own name for films, launching a career that would span nearly six decades. Morricone’s style defied convention, combining classical training with avant‑garde experimentation, jazz, and popular idioms. He was a founding member of the experimental Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, and yet he could write melodies of haunting simplicity. His scores for spaghetti westerns—especially in partnership with Sergio Leone—brought instruments like harmonica and whistle into popular cinema, forging a musical language instantly recognizable worldwide. Through the years, Morricone composed over 400 film and television scores and more than 100 classical works. His signature themes—from The Ecstasy of Gold to Gabriel’s Oboe—covered everything from Westerns to horror, drama and political films. He collaborated with both Italian auteurs and international directors, scored beloved films like Cinema Paradiso and The Untouchables, and earned acclaim including Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Grammys, BAFTAs, and an honorary Oscar in 2007. Morricone’s legacy is immense. He reshaped what film music could be, inspiring composers across genres, from Hans Zimmer to Muse and Metallica. His influence extends far beyond cinema, and his work continues to enchant listeners of all generations. Recently, Naples finally staged his only opera—composed in 1995—three decades after he wrote it, a vindication of his lifelong claim that he was more than just a film‑score composer.
