About Dean Martin
Dean Martin was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1917 to Italian immigrant parents. His early life was a patchwork of odd jobs—steel mills, bootlegging, a stint as a croupier in an illegal casino—and even bare‑knuckle boxing, before transforming into a crooner known as “Dino Martini.” A change of name at the suggestion of bandleader Sammy Watkins marked the start of his musical career, laying the groundwork for his later ease and charm on stage, radio, film, and television. His breakthrough came in 1946 when he teamed up with comedian Jerry Lewis. As Martin & Lewis, they became one of America’s most beloved comedy duos, lighting up nightclubs, radio, film, and television with their wildly successful blend of song and slapstick—until their partnership dissolved in 1956, after a decade in the spotlight. Moving into a solo career, Dean Martin found his sweet spot as a smooth-voiced crooner of both contemporary pop and standards from the Great American Songbook. Hits like “That’s Amore,” “Memories Are Made of This,” and his signature “Everybody Loves Somebody” made him a recording icon. On the silver screen, he appeared in beloved films like Rio Bravo, Ocean’s Eleven, and Toy Story, and headlined his own television variety show, The Dean Martin Show, from 1965 to 1974. Beyond the highlights of charts and film, Martin’s cool, relaxed persona resonated deeply. A core member of the swanky Rat Pack alongside Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., he embodied a mid‑century style of effortless charm. Even after his death in 1995, his legacy endures through frequent use in film, TV, and pop culture, his celebrated shows, and his timeless recordings that continue to delight vinyl, CD, and cassette collectors worldwide.
