About Diana Krall

Born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up in a musical household where her father played piano and her mother sang. She began piano lessons at age four, and by fifteen she was performing professionally in local restaurants. A breakthrough came when bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton recognized her talent, encouraging her move to Los Angeles to study with jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles and later leading to scholarship studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. These formative years honed her dual role as both a thoughtful pianist and a quietly commanding vocalist. Krall’s musical style blends cool jazz sensibilities with traditional pop and bossa nova influences, always anchored by her warm contralto and understated swing. Her approach evokes the intimacy of Nat King Cole while retaining modern sensibilities. She often works in trio settings, occasionally augmented by strings or subtle orchestration, creating an elegant yet emotionally resonant sound, beloved by both traditional jazz aficionados and broader audiences. Her recording career began with "Stepping Out" (1993), followed by the breakthrough tribute album "All for You" (1996), which honored the Nat King Cole Trio and spent months on the jazz charts. Her 1999 album "When I Look in Your Eyes" earned her a Grammy and even a rare jazz nod for Album of the Year. Other landmark albums include "The Look of Love" (2001), "Live in Paris" (2002), and the introspective "The Girl in the Other Room" (2004), which featured her own compositions co-written with Elvis Costello, whom she married in 2003. Krall’s later work continued to explore both standards and new directions—from bossa nova and Christmas songs to contemporary covers, such as on "Quiet Nights" (2009), "Glad Rag Doll" (2012), "Wallflower" (2015), and the Gershwin duet album with Tony Bennett, "Love Is Here to Stay" (2018). Her 2020 album "This Dream of You" served as a poignant tribute to her late producer Tommy LiPuma, blending personal reflection with lyrical sophistication. Across her career, Diana Krall has sold millions of albums worldwide, earned multiple Grammys and Juno awards, and achieved historic milestones such as having numerous albums debut atop the Billboard Jazz chart. Her legacy is one of accessible sophistication—bringing jazz to new audiences while remaining deeply rooted in its traditions. At Calcutta Records, her discs—whether vinyl, CD or cassette—offer both timeless elegance and soulful storytelling.
