About Genesis

Genesis sprung to life in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Surrey, England, where schoolmates Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips and Chris Stewart began collaborating. Their earliest work leaned into whimsical, complex storytelling with folk and psychedelic flourishes, culminating in ambitious early albums like Trespass and Nursery Cryme. These formative years earned them a dedicated cult following as they toured small British venues and honed their signature theatrical performances. The 1970s saw the arrival of Phil Collins on drums and later lead vocals, and guitarist Steve Hackett joining to solidify the classic five-piece line‑up. The band’s musical palate expanded toward sweeping narratives and suite‑style compositions, most famously on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, a full‑length rock opera exploring surreal and allegorical themes. After Peter Gabriel’s departure, Genesis demonstrated resilience, debuting with Collins as frontman on A Trick of the Tail and continuing to release bold, musically rich records such as Wind & Wuthering. By the early 1980s, Genesis began weaving pop sensibilities into their evolving sound. Albums like Duke and Abacab melded accessible melodies with instrumental craftsmanship. Their commercial peak arrived with Invisible Touch in 1986—driven by hit singles like “Invisible Touch”, “Land of Confusion” and “Throwing It All Away”—followed by We Can’t Dance in 1991, their final studio album with Collins, which sustained high chart success and demonstrated their polished, stadium‑ready appeal. Genesis’ legacy spans from progressive rock innovators to pop-rock icons, selling over 100 million records worldwide. They’ve been embraced by multiple musical generations, honored with awards including a Grammy and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their ability to evolve—from pastoral prog epics to accessible pop anthems—cements their enduring influence and relevance in music history.
