About Herbie Mann
Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn in 1930 to a family of performers. His early musical life began with clarinet studies before expanding to tenor saxophone and ultimately the flute—a choice that would set him apart. He served in the U.S. Army band stationed in Italy, and on returning to New York he focused on the flute, quickly becoming a prominent jazz voice and winning Down Beat’s poll for best flutist in 1957. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mann pushed the boundaries of jazz by weaving Afro‑Cuban rhythms into his live performances, notably on the album “Flautista!”, and embracing Brazilian bossa nova on recordings after a tour of Brazil, collaborating with artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim. His adventurous musical palette earned him recognition as an early ambassador of world‑music fusion in jazz. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mann had expanded into soul‑jazz, funk and even disco. The album “Memphis Underground” fused southern soul, blues‑rock, reggae and jazz, featuring prominent session musicians, while “Hi‑Jack” became a Billboard dance chart topper in 1975. He also founded Embryo Records and later Kokopelli Records, promoting jazz and fusion artists. Mann’s later years saw a return to jazz roots with renewed respect from critics. He continued performing into the early 2000s, with his final recordings reflecting a lifetime of musical curiosity. When he passed away in 2003, his legacy as a restless innovator—one who brought the flute to the forefront of jazz and crossed cultural borders—was firmly established.
