About John Mayer
John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and grew up in Fairfield as the middle child of two educators. After briefly attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he moved to Atlanta in 1997 and honed his craft playing coffee houses and clubs. His early independent EP, Inside Wants Out, led to his debut studio album Room for Squares (2001), which produced breakthrough hits and launched his career firmly in the public eye. Mayer’s musical style spans adult contemporary, pop, blues and soft rock, with a reputation for polished songwriting paired with tasteful guitar work. He earned critical and commercial success with albums like Heavier Things (2003), which featured the Grammy-winning “Daughters,” and Continuum (2006), which further deepened his blues and soul influences and produced the hit “Waiting on the World to Change.” He also formed the John Mayer Trio to explore his blues side more fully. Throughout the 2010s, Mayer evolved further. He released Born and Raised (2012) and Paradise Valley (2013), embracing rootsy, folk-tinged production and collaborating with artists like Katy Perry and Frank Ocean. His 2017 album The Search for Everything revived more of his soft rock sensibility. Since 2015, Mayer has also been a key member of Dead & Company, touring with members of the Grateful Dead and bringing his guitar work to jam‑band audiences. Beyond commercial success and awards, Mayer is respected for his musicianship and versatility. From early internet-based buzz to arena tours and collaborations with legends like Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, and Herbie Hancock, he has maintained a balance between mainstream appeal and deep musical credibility. His journey reflects continual growth, marked by both reflective songwriting and expressive guitar playing, making him a fixture in contemporary music.
