About Kshirode Prasad Vidyavinode
Kshirode Prasad Vidyavinode was born in Khardah, Calcutta in 1863 as Kshirode Chandra Bhattacharya. He excelled academically, passing the entrance exam in 1881 and earning a postgraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Calcutta. He taught chemistry at Chandernagore’s Dupleix College and later at the General Assembly’s Institution (now Scottish Church College), before retiring in 1903 to devote himself fully to literature and drama. Under the pen name Vidyavinode, he embarked on a prolific literary career spanning plays, novels, short stories, and poems. Deeply influenced by contemporaries such as Girishchandra Ghosh and Dwijendralal Roy, his writing style balanced narrative charm with thoughtful reflection, often avoiding emotional excess in favor of intellectual clarity. His dramatic works are diverse—ranging from short plays like “Phulshaya” and “Rangavati” to mythological dramas such as “Brhubahan,” “Durga,” and “Nar-Narayan,” as well as historic pieces like “Banger Pratapaditya,” “Palashir Prayashchitta,” and “Alamgir.” His plays like “Palashir Prayashchitta” and “Dada-Didi” were banned by the British for their nationalist fervor. He also edited the journal Aloukik Rahasya and translated the Bhagavad Gita into Bengali around 1900. Vidyavinode’s theatrical legacy resonates through the decades. His historical dramas stirred patriotic sentiment in early 20th-century Bengal, while performances of his works launched renowned actors such as Sisir Bhaduri. He is commemorated through landmarks like Kshirode Vidyavinode Avenue in North Kolkata, and a bust placed in Khardah in 2012. Though academic details of his personal life remain sparse, his legacy as a nationalist dramatist and educator endures.
