About Lonnie Smith
Lonnie Smith was born July 3, 1942, in Lackawanna (near Buffalo), New York, into a musical family led by his mother, who immersed him in gospel, classical, and jazz. In his teens he sang in vocal groups and switched to playing trumpet and tuba before being gifted his first Hammond B‑3 organ by a local music‑shop owner. He taught himself and quickly gained notice in Buffalo’s jazz and R&B clubs, earning the nickname “Dr.” for his ability to “doctor up” the music and his turbaned appearance. In the mid‑1960s, Smith joined George Benson’s quartet and played on albums like •It’s Uptown• and •Cookbook•, before launching his solo career. His debut as a leader, Finger‑Lickin’ Good (1967), featured Benson and set the stage for his signing with Blue Note Records. With Blue Note, he recorded a series of soul‑jazz classics—•Think!•, •Move Your Hand•, •Turning Point•, and •Drives•—that combined R&B rhythmic intensity with jazz sophistication. Through the 1970s and beyond, Smith broadened his palette, incorporating funk, fusion, psychedelia, and reinterpretations of pop and rock tunes. He recorded for labels including Groove Merchant, and later founded Pilgrimage Records in 2012. Smith rejoined Blue Note in 2015, releasing •Evolution• in 2016, •All in My Mind• in 2018, and the live album •Breathe• in 2021, features that included collaborations with Iggy Pop. Smith’s impact stretched beyond jazz: his grooves were widely sampled in hip‑hop, and he received many honors—including Jazz Journalists Association awards, induction into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, and the NEA Jazz Masters award in 2017. Dr. Lonnie Smith passed away September 28, 2021, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of soulful, boundary‑crossing organ music.
