About Miles Davis

Miles Dewey Davis III was born in 1926 in Alton, Illinois, into a well‑to‑do family, and studied briefly at Juilliard before learning his craft in New York’s thriving jazz scene under the influence of Charlie Parker. He made his mark in the late 1940s with the Birth of the Cool nonet—an ensemble that pioneered a more relaxed, chamber‑like approach to jazz, informing what came to be known as “cool jazz.” In the 1950s, Davis formed small groups with luminaries like John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, and Paul Chambers. This period produced classics such as ’Round About Midnight, Milestones, and the legendary Kind of Blue (1959)—the latter widely celebrated as perhaps the most influential jazz album ever, introducing modal harmony and giving jazz a new melodic freedom. In parallel, Davis and arranger Gil Evans created lush orchestral works like Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain, blending jazz with classical textures. In the late 1960s he embraced the electric revolution: albums like In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew forged the path to jazz‑rock fusion, layering electric instruments, studio editing, and rock rhythms in ways that reshaped modern music. After a mid‑1970s hiatus, Davis returned in the 1980s with new collaborations and sounds—most notably the synthesizer‑rich Tutu album—continuing to defy expectations and influence generations. His legacy endures in countless musicians across jazz, rock, ambient, and beyond, and his music remains a cornerstone of the record collections of aficionados worldwide.
