About Otis Redding
Otis Ray Redding Jr. was born on September 9, 1941, in Dawson, Georgia, and grew up in Macon where he worshipped gospel choirs and emulated both Sam Cooke’s elegance and Little Richard’s fire. Singing from childhood in church and on local radio, he cut his teeth touring the southern “Chitlin’ Circuit,” doing double duty as both singer and band driver long before he landed his breakthrough recording at Stax Studios in Memphis with “These Arms of Mine.” By the mid-1960s, Redding had found his signature sound: a Southern soul with R&B roots, marked by an open-throated delivery that felt both desperate and deeply honest. Backed by the legendary Booker T. & the M.G.’s, he carved out a raw, emotionally vivid style. His work with guitarist–songwriter Steve Cropper yielded stirring ballads like “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” as well as energetic anthems like “Fa‑Fa‑Fa‑Fa‑Fa (Sad Song)” and his impassioned take on “Respect.” Redding’s creative peak arrived in 1966 with the release of Complete & Unbelievable: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul, an album that distilled raw feeling into universal truth and helped redefine soul music’s artistic reach. Then, in 1967, his electrifying performance at the Monterey Pop Festival introduced him to a broader, predominantly white audience and set the stage for superstardom. Tragically, Redding’s life and career were cut short when he died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967, at age 26. Yet his voice lived on—his co‑written anthem “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” released posthumously in early 1968 with its wistful whistling outro, became his first number-one hit and one of soul music’s most mournful, enduring statements. Otis Redding’s legacy is vast. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, and today is remembered as a foundational soul artist whose heartfelt urgency continues to move listeners and influence generations of singers.
