About R.e.m.

R.E.M. began in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 when university students Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry united their shared love of punk and proto‑punk into a band that soon broke away from local scenes. Their debut EP Chronic Town and, just a year later, the critically adored album Murmur (1983) showcased their arpeggiated guitars, cryptic lyrics and introspective energy that became a blueprint for college rock. Musically, the band fused college rock with folk rock, jangle pop and post‑punk flourishes, crafting melodies that were both enigmatic and deeply affecting. Stipe’s voice—mysterious and emotionally charged—floated over Buck’s chiming guitar and Mills’s melodic basslines, anchored by Berry’s steady drumming. Their style inspired countless alternative and indie artists who came after them. They steadily rose through the ’80s with albums like Reckoning, Lifes Rich Pageant, Document and Green, breaking into mainstream success. “The One I Love” and “Orange Crush” cemented their presence on radio, and in 1991 they struck gold with “Losing My Religion,” a mandolin-driven single that soared into the top five. Their thoughtful songwriting and exploration of political and environmental themes set them apart. Bill Berry departed in 1997, but Stipe, Buck and Mills continued as a trio, releasing ambitious work like Up, Reveal and Around the Sun. The band amicably disbanded in 2011, having sold over 90 million albums worldwide and earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024. Their legacy endures, celebrated by fans and musicians alike for forging the path of alternative rock and leaving a poetic, melodic imprint on modern music.
