About Sandhya Mukherjee
Sandhya Mukherjee was born on 4 October 1931 in Calcutta, the youngest of six children of a railway official. From her early teens, she bristled with musical promise—recording her first song at age 12 and releasing her first record at 13. Trained extensively in music under maestros such as Pandit Santosh Kumar Basu, A. T. Kannan, Chinmoy Lahiri, and later the Patiala gharana luminary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and his son, she developed a voice rich in classical discipline yet luminous in emotional breadth. Though classically grounded, Sandhya found her true calling in the world of playback singing. She began her film career in Mumbai in the early 1950s, appearing in roughly seventeen Hindi films before returning to her roots in Kolkata in 1952. In Bengal, she became the voice of the silver screen, particularly synonymous with the on-screen chemistry of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen, thanks to her duets with the legendary Hemanta Mukherjee. Her repertoire ranged from modern Bengali songs to Nazrul Geeti, Rabindra Sangeet, semi-classical numbers, and patriotic anthems. For her contributions to cinema she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Jay Jayanti and Nishi Padma (1970), the Banga Bibhushan (2011), multiple BFJA awards, and an honorary D.Litt. from Jadavpur University. In 2022, she stirred national conversation by refusing the Padma Shri award, calling it "disparaging and degrading" for an artist of her stature. Beyond music, she lent her voice and presence to social causes—especially during the Bangladesh Liberation War when she helped set up the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and recorded stirring songs of solidarity. Her voice became emblematic of cultural resilience and compassion. She passed away on 15 February 2022 in Kolkata at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Sandhya Mukherjee remains a towering figure in Bengali music history—a classically refined singer whose every rendition carried the warmth of human emotion, and whose career bridged the worlds of film, tradition and conscience.
