About Satyajit Ray
Born in Calcutta to a creative family, Satyajit Ray initially worked as a commercial artist before turning to cinema in the 1950s. He quickly established himself as a master storyteller with Pather Panchali, and from the mid‑1960s onward, he composed original music for many of his own films, viewing melody as integral to cinematic emotion. Rather than hire outside composers, he sketched motifs himself and blended Indian and Western musical frameworks with understated grace. Alongside composing for his films, he scored music for documentaries and films by others, such as Shakespeare Wallah (1965) and his son Sandip Ray’s Phatikchand (1983), showing a versatile aptitude across genres. In films like Charulata (1964), Ray wove Rabindranath Tagore’s songs into his score, creating haunting, emotionally resonant soundtracks that linger long after the film ends. He played piano to sketch themes and employed instruments like violins, cellos, timpani, and even Carnatic elements in the Goopy–Bagha films to craft playful yet sophisticated music. His final film Agantuk includes his own baritone voice in the score—an intimate touch by an artist for whom music was as natural as image. Though best known as one of the greatest directors of global cinema, Ray’s legacy as a composer endures. His themes, such as the Feluda motif, are instantly recognizable, and his work is praised as haunting and soul‑stirring. He redefined how music could serve the story, making it a narrative character in its own right. For the vinyl, CD, and cassette enthusiast, his records are not just soundtracks but enduring works of art that capture the voice of a singular cinematic and musical vision. Ray’s music remains influential and admired by composers worldwide. His approach—simple yet layered, culturally assured yet universally expressive—ensures that owning Ray’s music, in any format, is a treasure for the collector and a window into the heart of Indian cinema.
